About EFWM’s Board of Directors
The members of our board of directors are appointed by the Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina and the Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina.
Board members serve 3-year terms, and are eligible to serve two consecutive terms with their Bishop’s approval. Members are eligible for subsequent re-appointment to the board only after the passage of one year from the termination of the last term of any service on the board.
Regular meetings are held at least six times annually, including at least one in-person meeting.
Board members should not miss more than two meetings per year.
In addition, board members are expected to join one committee (sustainability, financial, personnel, executive), which meets 6 to 12 times per year.
Board members do not receive any compensation for their services.

Responsibilities
General Responsibilities of Board Members:
EFWM’s board is responsible for making sure the ministry is effective, financially viable, and carrying out the mission as laid out by the Dioceses of North Carolina and East Carolina. Specific responsibilities include:
- Board members have an ethical and fiduciary responsibility for making sure that money is being raised and spent in a responsible manner. This means that board members must help create or approve a budget that they fully understand and must review income and expenses on a regular basis. In some cases, this means that the people who handle the money should be bonded. The board is responsible for making sure the ministry has adequate insurance and an annual audit (often required by funders).
- Board members are responsible for making sure the ministry is well managed. Board members have the authority and responsibility to hire (and fire) the director. They also must make sure that the director has what she/he needs to do the job, and is supported, held accountable and evaluated on a regular basis.
- Board members are responsible for raising funds for the ministry and for ensuring adequate funds are available to support the ministry’s mission. While some fundraising work may be given over to the staff, the board is responsible for creating and approving the budget and for ensuring that the budget is raised. Each board member should make a direct personal contribution to the budget. Each board member must also participate in fundraising activities.
- Board members are responsible for developing the ministry’s mission, make decisions about program directions, and take part in long-range planning.
Personal Responsibility:
Board members typically have at least six specific personal responsibilities:
- It’s essential that board members believe in the mission of the ministry and help shape and/or support the vision behind that mission.
- Board members are expected to make a time and energy commitment, including attendance at board and committee meetings.
- Many organizations from whom grant funds may be sought will expect that one hundred percent of the board helps to financially support the work of the ministry, so we hope that each board member will make a financial commitment, although every board member does not have to contribute at the same level.
- Board members bring a particular talent, skill, knowledge, contact or other contribution to the work of the board. This can include experience in the community being served, previous board experience, energy and enthusiasm for the work of the ministry, willingness to learn board skills, or technical skills such as legal or public relations know-how.
- Board members are expected to demonstrate a desire to serve and to share their ideas, experiences, feelings, insights, fears, questions, etc. to the ministry. We ask that all board members read the ministry’s materials, ask questions, think things through, make suggestions, and express honest feelings.
- We hope our board members will see themselves as facilitators for the ministry, providing support to staff and other board members, and being open to working with others, respecting new ideas, and taking reasonable risks.
