February 16, 2020, marked a day of love and celebration. Shrouded by streamers and heart-shaped balloons, members of the community from near and far came to the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry to take part in their “Dia del Amor y la Amistad” event. EFWM hosted the event with the intent of building community while educating the local community on resources and services available to them through the ministry.
The day proved extremely enjoyable for both parents and children alike. Following a welcome from EFWM staff, everyone gathered around for delicious tacos and Mexican Pozole prepared by members of the community; giving people a chance to catch up and meet those who were new to the ministry. The day was filled with fun and activities for all who attended. There was a free hug station, and photo booth, active throughout the whole event. Pairs could have their own “Casimientos” (this provided many laughs for all involved), or fake marriages. There were multiple musical chairs contests. Raffles were drawn, providing multiple winners with valentine’s themed gifts. And there was a very energetic couple’s balloon-popping contest with a dinner for two as the prize.
After a day full of laughter and fellowship, leftovers were packed, karaoke was sung, and there was an overwhelming sense of family. Everyone was pleased and thankful for the opportunity to take a break from their hectic lives if only for a day, to enjoy their friends and spread love. In a time where members of this community are persecuted and oppressed, the contrast of children playing while their families laughed in solidarity was a sight to behold. It was truly a celebration of what EFWM and its fellow community members have been able to build over the years. There are many events slated to be held at EFWM for the remainder of 2020. Be sure to bring yourself and a friend to come be a part of the family.
Special thanks to Debi E. and Joan A. for providing donations that made this event possible. We are also grateful to EFWM’s leadership committee for donating all the food and drinks, and for volunteering.
