It has been over 5 months since Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina and affected the lives of thousands of people. Although the devastation of the hurricane is no longer on the news, the families whose lives were changed by this disaster continue working towards recovery.
After providing immediate relief aid (food, water, hygiene items and cleaning supplies) to hundreds of people, EFWM decided to focus its efforts helping families whose homes were damaged or who lost significant income due to the hurricane.
We started with a list of 60 families who needed help. Some of them had lost it all: jobs, vehicles and homes. Some of them needed small repairs, like replacing windows or doors. Some people needed help to pay bills, while others requested help finding a safe place to live with their families while they figured out how to repair or replace their home. Stranded workers asked for help.
We have worked tirelessly to provide aid to these families, and so far, we have been able to assist 38 of these families. The 22 families who remain on the list are not ready to rebuild yet and know that when they are ready, EFWM will be here for them. Another set of families is on a waiting list and we are hoping to help them soon!
In addition to this, thanks to the support of the Triangle community, we have been able to deliver appliances and furniture to many families in the community. Some homes got flooded and the furniture got damaged. Appliances were usually damaged with the power outages.
We would like to thank everyone who has made in-kind or financial donations, all the volunteers, and all the people who continue to support these families despite the passing of time.
Special thanks to FSI Mechanical for allowing their staff to take time off to help us move a moving truck full of appliances and furniture.
